Joy Ministries' Summer Reading Camp

 

The words on the page seem to jumble together as faces peer in expectation. Embarrassment rushes over him as his inability to read becomes obvious.

Can you imagine the feeling and difficulty of a young child who does not know how to read? The inability to read leaves an impact upon not only the size of a child’s library, but also upon their behavior, their future, and their understanding of who they are. God has given Joy Ministries a desire to help children overcome this obstacle, and realize their potential.

Summer Reading Camp is an Outreach offered in low-income neighborhoods, which gives children a chance to learn to read or improve their reading skills. Summer Reading Camp utilizes a fun and “song” focused curriculum, which almost makes the children forget that they are learning. Children are taught by certified teachers and the program provides individualized teaching, which helps the children to learn at a faster rate. By the completion of the program, many of the children are able to read above their grade level.

After eight weeks of teaching, he confidently reads the pages in front of him. He no longer feels the need to get defensive at the glares of his listening peers. Instead, he is full of joyful confidence as he embraces his trophy at the Summer Reading Camp Graduation. He knows that this is just the beginning of what he can accomplish.
